There are five different types of editing. Which type do you need at which part of the writing process? Do you even need all of them? Each author and each editor is different. Some developmental editors also do structural editing at the same time. Some editors, like myself, do copyediting and proofreading at the same time. Below is a short list of what each type involves.

• Developmental Edit: The big picture. Characters, plots, and themes.
• Structural Edit: Story structure. Consistency. If story needs more info or less.
• Line Edit: Flow, tenses, word choice.
• Copy Edit: Mechanical. Typos, dialogue tags, readability.
• Proofreading: Mechanical. Typos, punctuation, grammar, etc.
